"I help successful but exhausted mid-life men break out of the Groundhog Day trap and reclaim their edge through purpose-driven adventure."

Hi, I'm Matt Koerber, founder of 1 Life Mentors, and Certified Life Coach.

I know what it's like to look fine on the outside while quietly spiralling on the inside. And I know what it takes to rebuild a life from the ground up. Twice.

Back in 1995, I was in the Army. Physically fit, wearing the uniform, but mentally unravelling. I was using alcohol on the weekends to numb out, and my anxiety got so crippling that one day, my hands were shaking so badly a colleague had to drive me to the Army medical centre.

I eventually left the military and built a solid IT career, but the pattern followed me. I was trapped in the Groundhog Day loop of existing, surviving, and being spiritually exhausted.

In 2003, a colleague handed me a brochure for an adventure race. Out of sheer desperation to break the monotony, I bought a mountain bike. I raced the next weekend, and in the middle of all that physical exhaustion, I finally woke up.

That race became my anchor. Within eight years, I competed in three World Championships across North America and right here at home in Australia. I went from being a guy who couldn't even drive himself to a medical centre, to representing my country.

The story should have ended there. But in 2017, after my two children arrived, I went through a brutal, high-conflict divorce. Suddenly, I was a 45 year old single father to two toddlers, navigating relentless stress. The weight of the responsibilities was heavier than it had ever been. The excuse to quit and just put my head down, give up on adventure, and settle for the daily grind was handed to me on a silver platter. I could have easily told myself my best years were over.

But I knew I couldn't be the father my kids needed if I was dead inside. So, I applied the exact same blueprint I used to save myself the first time. I carved out the time. I did the work.

Two years into being a single dad, I lined up for a 100km ultramarathon and placed 9th outright. Ten weeks later, I was in Europe. I raced the brutal 75km Tour de Tirol stage race and backed it up the very next weekend with the Brocken Mountain Marathon.

And it was on that trip, reborn and rebuilt, that I went running through the Rhine Valley at dawn. I ran past ancient castles. I stopped to press my bare hands against the cold stone walls and smelt the damp, rich history in the air. I looked down at the tourist barges floating silently on the water below, full of people watching the world pass by from a safe, comfortable distance. In that moment, I realised I was experiencing a staggering, raw beauty that most people never get to feel. And I got there propelled by my own two feet, my own lungs, and my own refusal to quit.

I am sharing this because I know exactly what it feels like to think you're stuck. I see too many capable men letting their lives shrink because they think a demanding job, a messy divorce, or a busy family means their adventuring days are over.

It is a lie. You don't need to blow up your life to feel alive again. You just need a structured, realistic way to integrate adventure into the messy, complicated life you already have.

I want to help you get off the barge. If I can rebuild from where I was and do it again as a single dad, so can you. Let me show you how.

So if that's you, I want you to hear this:

You're not broken. You're not done. And you do not have to keep living in that loop just because it's familiar. Sometimes the way back starts when you choose a challenge big enough to pull you forward again.
